ÖBB Rail Cargo Group has increased frequency on its Villach–Desio service, strengthening rail freight links between Austria and northern Italy.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has increased frequency on its Villach–Desio TransFER, now operating the service twice weekly as demand grows on the Austria–Italy corridor.

The connection links Villach with one of northern Italy’s key industrial regions, offering a transit time of around one day and supporting a wide range of cargo, from wagonload traffic to containers.

From a market perspective, the move highlights the continued importance of flexible rail solutions that combine single wagonload and intermodal transport, particularly on short- to medium-distance cross-border routes.

The service is part of the broader Villach–Italy network, which connects multiple destinations across northern, central and southern Italy, including Sicily, through a fixed timetable system.

At the centre of the operation is the Villach Süd marshalling yard, which serves as a key hub for consolidating shipments and forming trains for flows towards Italy and Southeast Europe.

On the Italian side, the Desio logistics terminal provides additional warehousing and distribution capabilities, supporting first- and last-mile operations across the wider Milan region and northern Italy.

For rail freight operators, the development underlines the role of hub-based networks and integrated logistics services in maintaining competitiveness on key European corridors.
