The festival has been held since 1985. This year marks its 35th year, whereas in 1990 and 1991 it was not held due to a decline in audience interest. During those years, David Bowie, U2, Metallica, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, and Iron Maiden, among others, performed there.
More than 150,000 visitors come to the Nürburgring every year. The nearest train station is Koblenz, from there there is a city shuttle to the site.
