The section of the Bergen Railway between Finse and Myrdal remains closed following a fire in a snow cover between Fagernut and Hallingskeid on Monday, 7 October 2024.

The fire, which started in the early hours of the morning, caused significant damage to the infrastructure, leading to the closure of this portion of the line for several days.

Bane NOR, responsible for Norway's railway infrastructure, has confirmed that the repairs are underway. The fire affected a 200-meter stretch, requiring the replacement of sleepers, rails, and signal cables, as well as the reconstruction of the catenary system. The foundations for the overhead masts will also need to be rebuilt, extending the repair efforts.

The fire was initially reported at 06:40 on Monday. Firefighters, working from both sides of the snow cover, were able to extinguish the flames before they spread to other parts of the railway, though the damage had already rendered the section inoperable. There were no injuries, and Bane NOR provided support to emergency services during the response.

Bane NOR aims to provide an update on the progress of repairs by Wednesday, 9 October 2024.
