The arrangement focuses on reducing CO₂ emissions by combining multiple transport modes across the supply chain.

DB Cargo BTT and Covestro have introduced a transport concept integrating rail and biofuel-powered trucks to manage shipments of methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI).

Multi-stage transport system

The logistics framework incorporates three stages: biofuel-powered trucks handle the first mile from Covestro's production sites to a nearby terminal; rail transport covers the main route from Germany to Poland; and the final mile relies again on biofuel trucks to deliver products to end customers. According to available data, this setup reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 70% compared to conventional truck-based logistics using fossil fuels.

Role of the Polish distribution hub

A distribution hub in Poland plays a key role in the concept. Established two years ago as part of a larger logistics plan, the hub supports storage and distribution for MDI shipments, enhancing supply reliability for customers in the region.

The logistics process involves partnerships with external operators. DB Cargo BTT combines its rail network and industry expertise with contributions from these partners to manage the supply chain. Covestro reportedly focuses on aspects such as transport route selection, load optimization, and the use of alternative energy sources.

Environmental considerations in the chemical industry

The implementation reflects an attempt to reduce the environmental impact of chemical logistics. Linking biofuel-powered vehicles with rail transport is part of broader efforts in the industry to minimize emissions while maintaining efficient supply chain operations.

This approach highlights how existing transport frameworks are being adjusted to align with evolving environmental priorities in the logistics and chemical sectors.

DB Cargo BTT provides rail logistics services for chemicals and mineral oil industry. It was formed in 1989 as BTT Bahn Tank Transport GmbH with a mission to shift the transport of dangerous goods to rail. In 1994 it was incorporated to Deutsche Bahn, forming DB Cargo BTT.
