At full capacity, the terminal is designed to handle up to 44 trains per day and approximately 395,000 intermodal transport units (ITUs) per year.

TerAlp has completed installation of the first three electric gantry cranes at the new Milano Smistamento intermodal terminal in Milan. The project represents a total investment of EUR 120m and is led by TerAlp, a company of FS Logistix (FS Group) and a subsidiary of Hupac.

The cranes form part of a EUR 31m contract signed in August 2024 with Austrian manufacturer Kuenz for the production, assembly and commissioning of six rail-mounted gantry cranes. The equipment will handle container loading and unloading operations at the terminal.

Milano Smistamento will cover around 240,000 m² and include 15 tracks of at least 740 m in length. Ten tracks are designated for transhipment and five for support functions. The infrastructure is being developed in two modules, each equipped with three gantry cranes.

The facility is intended to serve freight flows along the Italy–Switzerland–Northern Europe corridor, including traffic routed via the Gotthard and Monte Ceneri base tunnels.
