Preparations are underway for the next testing phase of the Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) system, as a demo train plans to operate in Austria in 2026.

The upcoming tests of Rail Cargo Group form part of the FP5-TRANS4M-R initiative under Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking. The project will focus on DAC integration under real-world conditions, including winter operations. The train will be operated by ÖBB and specially equipped for the trials.

This phase builds on earlier work by the DAC4EU programme, which since 2020 has tested coupling prototypes from various manufacturers across different countries. The demo train will allow further analysis of system performance, with an emphasis on operational efficiency, automation potential, and continuous power and data transmission between wagons.

The results of the 2026 trials will contribute to the upcoming Pioneer DAC Trains (PioDAC) project. From 2027, PioDAC will oversee the first wider deployment of freight trains using DAC technology, combined with digital train functions.
