Turkey's national electric mainline locomotive E5000, produced at the TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir factory, has hit the rails. The E5000 Electric Mainline Locomotive is a new-generation locomotive with a minimum power of 5000 kW, an AC-AC drive system, TSI certification, and a speed of 140 km/h. It has been designed and produced in a highly domestic and national manner, especially the Traction System, TKYS, Transformer, APU, Converter unit, which are very critical and very important components in the locomotive sector.
TÜRASAŞ has become the largest representative of Turkey's rail system vehicles sector with integrated facilities that produce national and domestic technologies in 3 regions. The E5000 locomotive will play an important role in closing the current account deficit of Turkey when it becomes a commercial product. The design and production processes will be completed with domestic and national facilities. The production of the E5000 electric mainline locomotive has also been an important step in reducing Turkey's dependence on imports in the rail industry. By producing domestic and national locomotives, Turkey wants not only to increase its exports but will also improve its technological capabilities and create new jobs.
This electric locomotive contains many firsts, both for its class and for Turkey's railway adventure. It has the first car body, the first spark plug, the first train control and management system, the most powerful electric motor, the most powerful traction converter, the most powerful traction transformer and the most powerful auxiliary power unit designed domestically for mainline locomotives. All the key components developed for the electric locomotive are important in terms of having critical technology that can be exported as a separate product.
Each of the traction motors designed by TUBITAK RUTE and manufactured by TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate has a power of 1280 kW and has the characteristic of being the most powerful traction motor designed in Turkey to date. Similarly, each of the locomotive's traction converters has a power of 2.5 MW and is the most powerful high-voltage traction converter designed in Turkey for a railway system vehicle.
