Hellenic Train has launched a train driver training and certification programme for its Coradia Stream test train as part of the type-approval process for new electric multiple units.

The training covers static instruction at the depot, first departure procedures, operation under real network conditions and certification examinations for the specific rolling stock type. Upon completion, 10 drivers will be certified to support the next phases of the testing programme.

Network tests will focus on train operation, infrastructure compatibility and interaction with the electrification system. Pantograph tests will be carried out at different contact wire heights on the Platy–Katerini and Tithorea–Lianokladi sections, with runs at speeds of up to 160 km/h under special authorisation from infrastructure manager OSE.

Further stages include bogie tests to assess forces transmitted from the rolling stock to the infrastructure, as well as reviews of the maintenance plan. ETCS tests are scheduled for mid-May to confirm compatibility between trackside and onboard equipment.

The Coradia Stream test train arrived in Greece in early February and is based at Hellenic Train’s Thessaloniki depot when not in operation. It is used exclusively for inspection and approval activities and is equipped with measurement systems required under European and national legislation. The passenger rail operator will receive 23 of these trains.

The certification process forms part of the market authorisation procedure and is expected to conclude by December 2026, subject to approvals from the Hellenic Railway Regulatory Authority (RAS) and the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA).

The programme is included in Hellenic Train’s EUR 308m fleet renewal plan, which covers the introduction of new Coradia Stream EMUs manufactured by Alstom at its Savigliano site.
