METRANS has equipped 20 new Siemens Vectron locomotives with ETCS Baseline 3 under a project supported by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), managed by CINEA.
The project reached its final phase with a CINEA site visit to review implementation results. The deployment integrates the latest European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3 standard across part of METRANS’ active fleet, enabling operation on ETCS-equipped corridors of the TEN-T network.
A second component of the CEF-supported programme covered the development and validation of a prototype retrofit solution to upgrade an existing locomotive to ETCS Baseline 3. The retrofit package is scheduled for installation on a series of in-service locomotives in the coming months, also with CEF support.
The project forms part of the broader rollout of ERTMS/ETCS across EU Member States, aimed at improving cross-border interoperability and harmonising signalling standards on core freight corridors.
