6,000 job cuts at DB Cargo confirmed: DB supervisory board backs restructuring plan

An external expert assessment concludes that DB Cargo can be fundamentally restructured to achieve sustainable profitability.

The supervisory boards of Deutsche Bahn and DB Cargo have endorsed the freight operator’s restructuring programme, which includes a reduction of around 6,000 jobs.

The plan targets alignment with European growth markets and a simplification of organisational structures. According to Deutsche Bahn, the restructuring is intended to enable DB Cargo to meet the requirements of an ongoing EU competition procedure while maintaining its role as a logistics provider for European industry.

The expert report is in the final stages of review. Once completed, DB Cargo will begin negotiations with employee representatives on implementation, including future operational concepts and the role of individual regional locations.

The workforce reduction is to be carried out through what the company describes as socially responsible measures.
