Intermodal freight traffic at Umeå Kombiterminal grew almost by a half in 2024

Intermodal freight volumes at Umeå Kombiterminal saw a 46% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year, with further growth recorded in January 2025. The Port of Umeå also registered a 5% rise in handled goods, reaching 2.6 million tons over the past year.

Investments in railway facilities and port expansion have contributed to higher handling capacity.

Growth in freight traffic is also linked to stronger connections between Sweden and Finland. The floating E12 route between Vaasa and Umeå has played a role in the increased cargo movement, with Wasaline reporting a 3.2% rise in freight meters transported by its vessel, Aurora Botnia, in 2024.

The upward trend in intermodal transport volumes and port activity indicates continued demand for logistics solutions in the region, with further developments expected in 2025.
