In Kenya, construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway project was launched at Kibos in Kisumu County. The line extends Kenya’s SGR corridor west from Naivasha towards Kisumu and the Malaba border with Uganda.
The project addresses the missing standard-gauge section between the current inland terminus at Naivasha and the Ugandan border. It is part of the Northern Corridor rail programme, which links Mombasa port with inland Kenya and neighbouring markets in East and Central Africa.
Uganda has linked the Kenyan extension to its own transport planning, including moving cargo by rail and petroleum by pipeline. The Malaba connection is the main interface for future standard-gauge freight flows between Kenya and Uganda.
In Tanzania, TRC is preparing to move cargo by SGR from the port of Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, Ihumwa and Bahi, with onward transfer to the existing metre-gauge railway.
The planned operation will load cargo at the Malindi area of Dar es Salaam port before moving it by SGR freight train to Bahi in Dodoma Region. At Bahi, cargo will be transferred to the metre-gauge network for domestic and international destinations.
TRC said the Port Link area covers 100,000 m² and will handle cargo from the port, road trucks and inland container depots. The facility is intended to support faster rail loading and reduce truck movements around Dar es Salaam port and city routes, including the Morogoro Road corridor.
DP World, which is involved in Dar es Salaam port investment, said it is ready to work with railway stakeholders on infrastructure required for higher cargo volumes.
