The order follows the activation of an option included in a previous contract and raises the number of Elf units ordered under the current framework to 30.

Koleje Dolnośląskie (KD) has confirmed the expansion of its rolling stock portfolio with the purchase of an additional ten five-car Elf EMUs from Pesa Bydgoszcz.

The extended contract has a total value of PLN 440 million, equal to approximately EUR 102 million. Each of the new EMUs carries a unit cost of PLN 44 million (around EUR 10.2 million). Deliveries from the newly activated order are scheduled to begin in April 2026.

Once fulfilled, the carrier’s fleet of five-car Elf trains will reach 45 units, reportedly the highest number of its kind in Poland. These electric multiple units are deployed on regional services from Wrocław to destinations including Legnica, Lubin, and Zielona Góra.

The expansion contributes to KD’s wider effort to grow its fleet to nearly 120 trains. According to the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, this represents a 50% increase in the operator’s fleet size over the span of a few years. In addition to conventional electric rolling stock, consultations are ongoing regarding the possible acquisition of hydrogen or battery-powered units.

Koleje Dolnośląskie has operated services across Lower Silesia, including reinstated lines to locations such as Sobótka, Chocianów, Świeradów-Zdrój, Mirsk, Mysłakowice, and Karpacz. Some of these had not seen regular service for over two decades.

According to the regional authority, KD’s rolling stock investment is aligned with efforts to increase service frequency, open new connections, and maintain operations on both electrified and non-electrified lines in urban and rural areas.
