Freightliner Group has launched a new intermodal rail freight service connecting Tilbury2 port and Manchester Trafford Park. The service, which began operations on September 30th, runs five days a week, transporting containers arriving from Europe.
The Access Charge Discount scheme offers a temporary waiver on track access charges to assist new services in gaining traction, contributing to the financial viability of rail freight operations. Freightliner's new service for P&O Ferrymasters is the first to make use of this scheme, helping reduce the reliance on road freight and contributing to environmental sustainability efforts.
The Tilbury-Manchester connection is expected to remove approximately 10,000 trucks from UK roads annually, significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional road transport. The initiative aligns with broader industry goals to promote greener logistics and support companies in transitioning to rail-based solutions.
The new service also builds on existing collaboration between Freightliner, P&O Ferrymasters, and Forth Ports, operators of Tilbury2. This partnership aims to strengthen the UK’s intermodal transport network and offer a sustainable alternative for long-distance freight movements.
