Rail logistics operator METRANS and Slovak logistics company INTERPORT Servis have entered a partnership to modernise and expand the existing intermodal terminal near Košice, eastern Slovakia.
The upgraded terminal will include new handling and storage areas, with completion scheduled for 2027. It will feature dual-gauge infrastructure for both standard (1435 mm) and broad gauge (1520 mm) operations, allowing transshipment of freight from markets such as Ukraine to the EU rail network. Two gantry cranes will be installed to facilitate this transfer process.
The current terminal, which covers nearly 50,000 m², has been part of the METRANS network since 2008. The new investment will expand capacity and introduce digital and automation systems to improve efficiency. The companies plan to position TIP Košice as a key point on East-West trade corridors and a logistics interface between the EU and Ukraine.
The development is expected to support regional supply chains, shorten transit routes, and generate new employment opportunities. The project also aims to improve environmental performance and raise infrastructure standards, building on METRANS’s experience in intermodal freight and INTERPORT’s local knowledge.
The initiative is part of a broader trend of investing in terminal infrastructure along the EU’s eastern flank, driven by growing demand for reliable land transport connections between Central Europe and Ukraine.
