Explosions shook the Lithuanian capital Vilnius this morning following a fire in tankers carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG).

According to the emergency services, eight railway wagons carrying LNG caught fire on the outskirts of Vilnius. Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported that one person was injured. Authorities believe the fire was probably caused by a breach of work procedures.

The fire broke out at the Traku Voke filling station to the west of Vilnius. Residents in the area have been warned of possible air pollution.

World agencies reported that the fire may have been caused by employee negligence.

The police said that the wagons belonged to the Polish petrochemical company PKN Orlen.
